Build your own Domestic Wind Turbine Inverter

Modern day wind turbines use wind power to generate and store electrical energy. This fulfils the modern day demand for green energy. Thinking of installing a self-made wind turbine inverter at your home? Industrial turbines are too large for domestic purpose so it is a good idea to build your own.

For the wind turbine to be cost-effective and efficient, it needs to be installed in a place where the wind speed is at least 7 to 10 miles per hour. To generate optimum electricity the turbine works best at a wind speed ranging from 12 to 20 mph.

Few things that you’ll require:

  • Blades
  • A generator
  • A tower to mount the turbine
  • A mounting that keeps the turbine turned towards the wind
  • Batteries and control systems

For a turbine that generates energy up to 3 kilowatts of power you need at least half an acre of space. For one that generates 10 kilowatts you will need at least one full acre. The turbine should not be obstructed by buildings and trees.

You can either buy the blades or make them yourself from cross-sections of PVC pipe or wood. The blades have to be perfect for the turbine to work properly. Typically, the wind turbine inverter should have 3 blades. Even number of blades makes the turbine vibrate when it spins.

Next comes assembling the turbine. Attach the blades to a hub that connects generator with blades. Make a hole in the head shaft and attach the generator. The wind vane needs to be attached to the other end. Screw a 2.5 cm wide pipe nipple that helps the turbine to rotate freely. Lastly attach the blades and hub to the generator shaft.

To build the tower, make a strong base and cut a long PVC pipe to attach above it. Finally, connect the charge controller and battery. Then connect the insulated wire to charge controller. Thread the wires through the base and tower. Mount the tower on the base. Attach the turbine head on the tower. Finally connect the other end of wire to the generator and you are done.

You may find this a bit complicated, so in that case the best option is to buy one. Aurora / Power One wind turbine inverters work well for households and are also available at reasonable price.

Methods of Controlling Wind Turbines

With the gradual depletion of fossil fuels, wind turbines have gained popularity as devices that help to generate electricity from wind. Producing electricity in this manner has helped to cut done electricity costs considerably.

But while you use a wind turbine happily, you must make it work properly to make it long lasting. Wind turbine control is necessary to make the maintenance costs low and make the device more efficient. The wind power controllers also make sure the turbine works safely, optimizes power output and has long structural life. The generator and turbine rotational speed are key areas which should be controlled for better power optimization.

Power can either be limited or optimized by various methods which include blade angle, controlling the generator speed and rotation of entire wind turbine. Blade angle adjustment is referred to as pitch control and turbine rotation is known as yaw control. What is the purpose of pitch and yaw control

  • Pitch control is done to maintain optimum blade angle which in turn achieves certain rotor speeds. Stalling and furling two methods that helps in pitch control.
  • Yaw refers to the actual rotation of the wind turbine across the horizontal axis. The wind directions change constantly and as a result turbine may misalign. This causes power output losses. Yaw control ensures the turbine faces the wind constantly to maximize the effective rotor area and produce maximum power.

So if you’re using a wind turbine system make sure you have the right kind of wind turbine controller along with it. Many types of wind power controllers are available in the market which includes:

  • Power One 25kw & 15Kw Wind Interface
  • Power One 20A Wind Interface
  • Custom Wind Turbine Controller & Remote Monitoring Solutions
  • Off-Grid Control Systems

Before you buy a control system make sure you have done a good market research and had a talk with experts in this field. On a final one, always remember – wind turbine control is very important for optimal performance, safe operation, and making the system long lasting.

Dream of a Green Future – Myth or Truth!

We constantly talk about greener future where the environment will be ecologically stable and we won’t have to fear devastating natural calamities. But the question is how? Two segments of people persistently debate over the fact whether the use of fossil fuels is better or should we shift our attention to renewable energy sources like sunlight and wind. While there is ample sunlight and wind power to produce renewable energy and the fuel is free; others say fossil fuels deliver economic benefits and giving up coal, natural gas and oil would involve a lot of suffering and sacrifice in terms of efficiency. Whom to believe?

Modern Day Technologies can Easily Undergo Transition of the Power Generation

Let’s start with believing that giving up fossil fuel will get us back to Stone Age. So do we keep burning coal and oil? The answer is an obvious NO. First of all, burning fossil fuels is resulting in extreme climatic changes and secondly, being non-renewable it’s getting depleted day-by-day resulting in higher costs. So is the renewable energy the only thing that we should rely on! Yes we can but before that we should have some facts cleared. Though many of us say there’s enough sunlight and wind to produce such energy, we should remember these are part of nature and we can’t control them. Sometimes the sun may shine or wind may blow and sometimes not.  This variability can be controlled by demand management or better say by changing the way we use energy at present. The good news is – with the modern day technologies, the power generation can easily undergo transition.

Renewable Energy Meets Today’s Energy Demand

The obvious question that arises is, whether we would be able to produce enough renew will able energy to match today’s energy demands? Whether this kind of energy offers less mobility? Yes there are too many questions to be asked. But with gradual invention of ways to collect, concentrate and produce renewable energy we can dream of greener and better future. With fossil fuel coming costlier and renewable form becoming cheaper, more and more people are bound to shift to this new form of energy. Increasing popularity of renewable energy producing equipments like wind turbine inverters, solar inverters, etc we are sure to bridge over all the difficulties.
